Action

DEFINITION: Vehicle front wheel shimmy or shake while driving on a smooth road

The tire and wheel are out of balance.

Balance the tires. Refer to Tire and Wheel Balancing in Vibration Diagnosis and Correction.

The tire and wheel are out of round.

Check runout. Refer to Tire and Wheel Vibration in Vibration Diagnosis and Correction.

The wheel bearings are worn or loose.

Adjust the wheel bearings. Refer to Wheel Bearing Adjustment in Front Suspension.

The king pin or king pin bearing is worn or loose.

  1. Replace the worn parts as needed.
  2. Adjust the king pin bearing.

Refer to Steering Knuckle Replacement in Front Suspension.

The ball joints are worn.

Replace the ball joints.

    • For the upper ball joint, refer to Upper Control Arm Ball Joint Replacement in Front Suspension.
    • For the lower ball joint, refer to Lower Control Arm Ball Joint Replacement in Front Suspension.

The shock absorber is malfunctioning.

  1. Inspect the shock absorber. Refer to Struts or Shock Absorbers Bench Test .
  2. Replace the shock absorber as needed. Refer to Shock Absorber Replacement in Front Suspension.
