Parking Brake Shoe Replacement Hydraulic Auto Apply
Removal Procedure
- Remove the drum (6). Refer to
Parking Brake Drum
.
- Remove the cable fitting (4) from the cam lever.
- Remove the support plate mounting bolts (7).
- Remove the support plate (8) and the lining assembly.
- Remove the return springs (2)
- Remove the anchor spring (5)
- Remove the linings (1).
Inspection Procedure

Inspect the linings for contamination
and excessive wear. Minimum lining thickness is 1.52 mm (0.060 in).
Replace the linings as a set. |
• | Inspect the springs for distortion and loss of tension. Replace
if necessary. |
• | Inspect the cam lever for grooves at the shoe contact points.
Replace if necessary. |
Installation Procedure
- Install the linings (1).
- Install the anchor spring (5).
Use Lubriplate (GM P/N 1050109) or the equivalent in order to lubricate
the points where the shoes contact the support plate.
- Install the return springs (2)
- Install the support plate (8) and the lining assembly to the transmission.
- Install the support plate mounting bolts (7).
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 46 N·m (34 lb ft).
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the drum (6). Refer to Drum

- Adjust the parking brake. Refer to
Lining Adjustment

Parking Brake Shoe Replacement Air
Removal Procedure
- Block the vehicle's wheels.
- Release the parking brake.
- Remove the propeller shaft. Refer to One Piece Propeller Shaft
in Propeller Shaft.
- Remove the drum. Refer to
Parking Brake Drum
.
- Remove the nut and the washer.
- Remove the cam and the lever.
- Remove the return springs.
Discard the old return springs.
- Remove the linings.
Mark each shoe so it can be assembled in its original position.
- Inspect the drum for cracks, scoring, pitting, grooves, and overheating
damage. Replace if necessary.
- Inspect all the mounting bolt holes in the drum for stress cracks.
- Inspect the linings for contamination and wear.
Installation Procedure
- Install the linings (5) on the backing
plate (8).
Align the marks on each shoe so it can be assembled in its original
position.
- Install the return springs (1).
Replace the old return springs with the new springs.
- Install the cam (7), lever (2) and strut actuator (6).
- Install the nut (3) and the washer (4).
- Tighten the nut in order to establish clearance between .001-.01 mm
(.0004 in) as measured with a feeler gauge between the lever and the
backing plate.
- Install the drum. Refer to

- Install the propeller shaft. Refer to One Piece Propeller Shaft
in Propeller Shaft.
