Removal Procedure

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
  2. Remove the radiator grille. Refer to Grille Replacement in Exterior Trim.
  3. Remove the headlamps. Refer to Sealed Beam Headlamp Replacement in Lighting Systems.
  4. Remove the hood latch cover. Refer to Hood Latch Cover Replacement .
  5. Remove the hood latch. Refer to Hood Primary and Secondary Latch Replacement .
  6. Remove the auxiliary engine cooler, if equipped. Refer to Auxiliary Engine Oil Cooler Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  7. Remove the auxiliary transmission cooler, if equipped. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Flushing and Flow Test in Automatic Transmission 4L60E or Transmission Fluid Cooler Flushing and Flow Test Automatic Transmission 4L80E.
  8. Remove the air baffle from the radiator support, if equipped. Refer to Radiator Air Baffle Assemblies and Deflectors in Engine Cooling.
  9. Remove the coolant recovery tank or the surge tank. Refer to Surge Tank (Diesel) Replacement or Coolant Recovery Reservoir Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  10. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  11. • For the 4.3L engine, refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement .
    • For the 5.0/ 5.7L engine, refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement .
    • For the 6.5L engine, refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement .
    • For the 7.4L engine, refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement .

  12. Remove the air conditioning condenser from the radiator support (2). Refer to Condenser Replacement in HVAC.
  13. Remove the radiator from the radiator support (1). Refer to Radiator Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  14. Remove the forward lamp harness from the radiator support (1).
  15. Remove the bolts (3) retaining the radiator support (1) to the vehicle.
  16. Remove the radiator support (1) from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the radiator support (1) to the vehicle.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the bolts (3) in order to retain the radiator support (1) to the vehicle.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  5. Install the forward lamp harness to the radiator support (1).
  6. Install the radiator to the radiator support. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  7. Install the air conditioning condenser to the radiator support (1). Refer to Condenser Replacement in HVAC.
  8. Install the air cleaner assembly.
  9. • For the 4.3L engine, refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement .
    • For the 5.0/ 5.7L engine, refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement .
    • For the 6.5L engine, refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement .
    • For the 7.4L engine, refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement .
  10. Install the coolant recovery tank or the surge tank to the vehicle. Refer to Surge Tank (Diesel) Replacement or Coolant Recovery Reservoir Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  11. Install the air baffle to the radiator support (1). Refer to Radiator Air Baffle Assemblies and Deflectors in Engine Cooling.
  12. Install the auxiliary transmission cooler. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Flushing and Flow Test in Automatic Transmission 4L60E or Transmission Fluid Cooler Flushing and Flow Test Transmission 4L80E.
  13. Install the auxiliary engine oil cooler. Refer to Auxiliary Engine Oil Cooler Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  14. Install the hood latch. Refer to Hood Primary and Secondary Latch Replacement .
  15. Install the hood latch cover. Refer to Hood Latch Cover Replacement .
  16. Install the headlamps. Refer to Sealed Beam Headlamp Replacement in Lighting Systems.
  17. Install the radiator grille. Refer to Grille Replacement in Exterior Trim.
  18. Connect the battery negative cable to the battery.
