Video Display is Poor or Blank but Backlighting is On Rear Display

DEFINITION: The rear video display screen backlighting is ON, but the picture is poor, blank or distorted. When playing a video source connected through the auxiliary RCA video jacks, the rear video display picture is OK.

Did you perform a Diagnostic System Check-Entertainment System?

  1. Turn ON the ignition.
  2. Turn ON the wireless headphones.
  3. Test the operation of the radio and rear seat audio (RSA) control with the rear video system OFF.
  4. Turn OFF the radio and the RSA control.
  5. Turn ON power to the video cassette player (VCP) and the rear video display.
  6. Insert a pre-recorded VHS tape in the VCP and press the PLAY button on the VCP. The video display plays video from the VCP. Video audio plays through the rear speakers and the wireless headphones, both channels.
  7. Stop the VCP.
  8. Connect an auxiliary video source to the auxiliary RCA video jacks.
  9. Turn ON the auxiliary video source, and press AUX on the VCP remote control. The video display plays auxiliary video. Auxiliary video audio plays through the rear speakers and the wireless headphones, both channels.

Does the system operate normally?

Test the VCP video signal (+) circuit for an open between the following circuits and the auxiliary audio/video input control:

    • The audio/video interface module
    • The rear video display

Refer to Circuit Testing , and to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector C1 of the audio/video interface module. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections , and to Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the rear video display. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections , and to Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

DEFINITION: The video display screen backlighting is ON, but the picture is blank or distorted at both video displays. When playing a video source connected through the auxiliary RCA video jacks, the video display picture is OK at both video displays.

  1. Turn ON the ignition.
  2. Turn ON the wireless headphones.
  3. Test the operation of the radio and rear seat audio (RSA) control with the rear video system OFF.
  4. Turn OFF the radio and the RSA control.
  5. Turn ON power to the video cassette player (VCP) and the front and rear video displays.
  6. Insert a pre-recorded VHS tape in the VCP and press the PLAY button on the VCP. The video display plays video from the VCP. Video audio plays through the rear speakers and the wireless headphones, both channels.
  7. Stop the VCP.
  8. Connect an auxiliary video source to the auxiliary RCA video jacks.
  9. Turn ON the auxiliary video source, and press AUX on the VCP remote control. The front and rear video displays play auxiliary video. Auxiliary video audio plays through the rear speakers and the wireless headphones (both channels).

Test the ground circuit at connector C2 of the video cassette player (VCP) for an open. Refer to Circuit Testing , and to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Test the VCP/DVD power on signal circuit for a short to voltage. Refer to Circuit Testing , and to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Test the VCP video signal (+) circuit for the following conditions:

    • A short to ground
    • A short to voltage
