Circuit/System Description

The engine control module (ECM) monitors the crankshaft position (CKP) and the camshaft position (CMP) signals to determine if they are synchronized. If both signals are not observed by the ECM within a narrow time window, the ECM will determine that an error has occurred.

Conditions for Running the DTC

    • DTCs P0116, P0117, P0118, P0126, P0335, P0336, P0340, P0341, P0642, P0643, P0652, and P0653 are not set.
    • The ignition is ON for longer than 2 seconds.
    • The battery voltage is between 10-16 volts.
    • The crank pulse is active.
    • The CAM pulse is active.
    • The engine speed is more than 350 RPM.
    • The engine coolant temperature is more than -30°C (-22°F).

Conditions for Setting the DTC

The ECM detects that the CKP sensor signals and CMP sensor signals are out of synchronization during 5 engine rotations.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

DTC P0016 is a Type B DTC.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

DTC P0016 is a Type B DTC.

Diagnostic Aids

Inspect for any recent engine mechanical repairs. An incorrectly installed camshaft or crankshaft will cause this DTC to set.

If DTC P0016 sets, the fuel injectors will be commanded OFF and the engine will not start.

Circuit/System Verification

    • If DTC P0116, P0117, P0118, P0126, P0335, P0336, P0340, P0341, P0642, P0643, P0652, and P0653 are set, test and repair those DTCs first.
    • Verify the integrity of the engine exhaust system by inspecting for the following conditions:
       - Damaged components
       - Loose or improper installation

Circuit/System Testing

Important: You must perform the Circuit/System Verification before proceeding with Circuit/System Testing.

  1. If the CKP or CMP sensor is loose and cannot be tightened, replace the sensor.
  2. Remove the CKP or CMP sensor and replace if the sensor casing is broken, or rattles when shaken.
  3. Remove the front engine cover and inspect for excessive camshaft endplay, timing gear misalignment, camshaft reluctor or crankshaft reluctor damage, or front engine cover damage.
