Starter Solenoid Does Not Click LG4 w/Automatic Transmission

Perform the starting system check. Refer to Starting System Check .

Does the solenoid click and the engine crank?

System OK

Go to Step 2

  1. Clean the following components:
  2. • The starter mounting bolts
    • The starter motor
    • The starter motor ground
    • The mounting surface
  3. Place the transmission in the NEUTRAL position.
  4. Turn and hold the ignition switch to the START position.

Does the solenoid click and the engine crank?

System OK

Go to Step 3

Does the solenoid click, but the engine does not crank?

--

Go to Starter Solenoid Clicks, Engine Does Not Crank

Go to Step 4

  1. Connect a test lamp from CKT 2 (RED) at starter solenoid terminal S (C4) to chassis ground.
  2. Place the transmission in the NEUTRAL position.
  3. Turn and hold the ignition switch to the START position.

Does the test lamp light?

--

Go to Step 5

Go to Step 6

Replace or repair the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Overhaul .

Is the repair complete?

--

System OK

--

  1. Connect a test lamp from CKT 6 (PPL) at the starter relay terminal 23 to chassis ground.
  2. Place the transmission in the NEUTRAL position.
  3. Turn and hold the ignition switch to the START position.

Does the test lamp light?

--

Go to Step 7

Go to Step 8

Locate and repair the open in CKT 6 (PPL) or CKT 2 (RED) between the starter relay and the starter solenoid.

Is the repair complete?

--

System OK

--

Connect a test lamp from CKT 2 (RED) at the starter relay terminal 24 to chassis ground.

Does the test lamp light?

--

Go to Step 10

Locate and repair the open in CKT 2 (RED) or CKT 4 (RED) or CKT 32 (BLU) (the fusible link) between the starter relay and the starter motor.

Is the repair complete?

--

System OK

--

  1. Connect a test lamp from CKT 434 (ORN/BLK) at starter relay connector C1 to chassis ground.
  2. Place the transmission in the NEUTRAL position.
  3. Turn and hold the ignition switch to the START position.

Does the test lamp light?

--

Go to Step 11

  1. Connect a jumper wire from CKT 150 (BLK) at starter relay connector C2 to chassis ground.
  2. Place the transmission in the NEUTRAL position.
  3. Place the ignition in the START position.

Does the engine crank?

--

Go to Step 12

Locate and repair the open in CKT 150 (BLK) between the starter relay and G107.

Is the repair complete?

--

System OK

Replace the starter relay. Refer to Starter Motor Relay Replacement .

  1. Connect a test lamp from neutral switch terminal B to chassis ground.
  2. Place the transmission in the NEUTRAL position.
  3. Place the ignition switch in the START position and hold.

Does the test lamp light?

Locate and repair the open in CKT 434 (ORN/BLK) between the neutral switch and the starter relay.

Is the repair complete?

--

System OK

  1. Connect a test lamp from neutral switch terminal A to chassis ground.
  2. Place the ignition switch in the START position and hold.

Does the test lamp light?

--

Go to Step 17

Inspect the neutral switch for proper adjustment.

Is an adjustment necessary?

Go to Step 18

Adjust the neutral switch as necessary.

Does the starter solenoid click and the engine crank?

Replace the neutral switch.

Is the repair complete?

  1. Connect a test lamp from CKT 33 (YEL) at terminal S of the ignition switch to chassis ground.
  2. Place the ignition switch in the START position and hold.

Does the test lamp light?

Locate and repair the open in CKT 33 (YEL) or CKT 5 (YEL) or CKT 806 (PPL) between the ignition switch and the neutral position switch.

Is the repair complete?

System OK

Connect a test lamp from CKT 30 (WHT/RED) at terminal B1 of the ignition switch to chassis ground.

Does the test lamp light?

--

Go to Step 23

Replace the ignition switch.

Is the repair complete?

Locate and repair the open in CKT 30 (WHT/RED) between the ignition switch and the IP fuse block.

Is the repair complete?
