Tools Required

1. Remove the valve rocker arms. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .
2. Remove the spark plugs. Refer to Spark Plug Replacement in Ignition Systems.



3. Install the J 23590 into the spark plug hole.
4. Apply compressed air in order to hold the valves in place.
5. Install a valve rocker arm nut.



6. Use the J 5892-D in order to compress the valve spring. Use spring compressor J 38606 when J 5892-D will not fit.
7. Remove the valve keys.



8. Carefully release the valve spring tension.
9. Remove the J 5892-D or J 38606 .
10. Remove the cap (2) and spring (4).
11. Remove the valve seal (3).

Tools Required

Important: 

•	Valve stem oil seal alignment onto the valve guide is critical.

•	A correctly installed oil seal should not bottom against the valve guide. There should be a 1-2 mm (0.03937 -- 0.07874 inch) gap (2) between the bottom edge of the seal (5) and the valve guide (4).

1. Install the new valve stem oil seal (3) over the valve stem. Push the seal down until the seal contacts the valve guide (2).



2. Place the J 42073 over the valve stem and the oil seal. Tap on the tool until it bottoms out against the valve spring seat.



3. Install the valve spring (4).
4. Install the cap (2) on the valve stem (5). Use the J 5892-D .




Notice: Make sure that the valve keys are properly seated in the valve spring retainer. Engine damage could occur if not properly installed.

5. Use the J 38606 if the clearance does not permit use of J 5892-D .
6. Install the valve keys (1). Use grease in order to hold the valve keys in place.



7. Carefully release the valve spring pressure, making sure the valve keys stay in place.
8. Remove the J 23590 J 5892-D or J 38606 .



9. Install the spark plugs. Refer to Spark Plug Replacement in Ignition System.
10. Install the valve rocker arms. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement
11. Install the valve rocker arm cover. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .
