Removal Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 23523-F Crankshaft Balancer Remover and Installer
    • J 38834 Balancer Shaft Bearing Service Kit
  1. Remove the radiator. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
  2. Remove the air conditioning condenser, if the vehicle is equipped with air conditioning. Refer to Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.

  3. Object Number: 5164  Size: SH
  4. Remove the timing chain and camshaft sprockets. Refer to Timing Chain and Sprocket Replacement .

  5. Object Number: 4578  Size: SH
  6. Remove the valve lifters. Refer to Valve Lifter Replacement .

  7. Object Number: 5137  Size: SH
  8. Remove the balance shaft retainer and the bolts.

  9. Object Number: 5139  Size: SH
  10. Use a soft-faced hammer to remove the balance shaft and the front bearing.

  11. Object Number: 5140  Size: SH
  12. Use the J 38834 in order to remove the rear balance shaft bearing.

Installation Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 23523-F Crankshaft Balancer Remover and Installer
    • J 38834 Balance Shaft Bearing Service Kit
    • J 36996 Balance Shaft Installer
    • J 8092 Universal Driver Handle
    • J 36660-A Torque/Angle Meter
  1. Dip the bearing into clean engine oil before installation.

  2. Object Number: 5140  Size: SH
  3. Use the J 38834 in order to install the balance shaft rear bearing.

  4. Object Number: 5141  Size: SH
  5. Use the J 36996 and the J 8092 in order to install the balance shaft and the front bearing.

  6. Object Number: 5137  Size: SH
  7. Install the balance shaft retainer
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the balance shaft retainer bolts to 12 N·m (106 lb in).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  9. Install the balance shaft driven gear, bolt and washer.
  10. Tighten

        • Tighten the bolt to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).
        • Using J 36660, tighten the bolt an additional 35 degrees.

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.   11. Rotate the balance shaft by hand in order to ensure that there is clearance between the balance shaft and the lifter retainer.
  12. Rotate the balance shaft key by hand in order to ensure that there is clearance between the balance shaft and the retainer. If the balance shaft does not rotate freely, ensure that the retaining ring on the front bearing is seated on the case.
  13. Install the balance shaft drive gear but do not install the camshaft bolts at this time.

  14. Object Number: 9848  Size: SH
  15. Rotate the camshaft so that the timing mark on the balance shaft drive gear is straight up.

  16. Object Number: 9849  Size: SH
  17. Remove the drive gear. Turn the balance shaft so that the timing mark on the driven gear points down.

  18. Object Number: 5144  Size: SH
  19. Position the drive gear onto the camshaft.
  20. • Ensure that the timing marks align.
    • The number four cylinder will be at the top dead center of its compression stroke. When installing the distributor, position the rotor so that it faces the number four terminal.

  21. Install the timing chain and the camshaft sprocket. Refer to Timing Chain and Sprocket Replacement

  22. Object Number: 4578  Size: SH
  23. Install the valve lifter retainer. Refer to Valve Lifter Replacement .
  24. Install the air conditioning condenser. Refer to Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.
  25. Install the radiator. Refer to Engine Cooling.
