Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 281197  Size: SH

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
  2. Remove the hood.
  3. Refer to Hood Replacement in Body Front End.

  4. Remove the right fender.
  5. Refer to Fender Replacement -- Right in Body Front End.

  6. Remove the right wheel panel.
  7. Refer to Wheel House Panel Replacement -- Right in Exterior Trim

  8. Remove the evaporator tube from the evaporator.
  9. Refer to Evaporator Tube Replacement .

  10. Remove the accumulator.
  11. Refer to Air Conditioning Accumulator Replacement .

  12. Remove the evaporator core assembly heat shield.
  13. Remove the electrical connectors/harnesses, as necessary.
  14. Remove the blower motor resistor.
  15. Refer to Blower Motor Resistor Replacement .

    Refer to Blower Motor Resistor.

  16. Remove the heater core case to the bulkhead mounting bolt.
  17. Remove the evaporator and the blower module screws and the nuts.
  18. Remove the acoustic barrier, if equipped.
  19. Remove the lower right heater core case mounting bolts.
  20. The bolts are located on the lower right side of the instrument panel on the 4.3L engine only.

  21. With the aid of an assistant, lightly pull the lower right corner of the heater case away from the bulkhead (4.3L engine only).
  22. Remove the evaporator core assembly from the vehicle.

  24. Disassemble the evaporator core case sections.
  25. Remove the evaporator core.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the evaporator core.
  2. Assemble the evaporator core case sections.

  3. Object Number: 281197  Size: SH
  4. With the aid of an assistant, pull the lower right corner of the heater case away from the bulkhead.
  5. Install the evaporator core assembly into the vehicle.
  6. Install the lower right heater core case mounting bolts (4.3L engine only).
  7. The bolts are located in the lower right side of the instrument panel.

  8. Install the acoustic barrier, if equipped.
  9. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  10. Install the evaporator core assembly screws and the nuts.
  11. Tighten

        • Tighten the bolts and the stud to 4.5 N·m (40 lb in).
        • Tighten the screw and the nuts to  N·m (22 lb in).
  12. Install the heater core case to the bulkhead mounting bolt.
  13. Install the blower motor resistor.
  14. Refer to Blower Motor Resistor Replacement .

  15. Connect the electrical connectors/harnesses, as necessary.
  16. Install the evaporator core assembly heat shield.
  17. Install the accumulator.
  18. Refer to Air Conditioning Accumulator Replacement .

  19. Install the evaporator tube to the evaporator.
  20. Refer to Evaporator Tube Replacement .

  21. Install the right front wheelhouse panel.
  22. Refer to Wheelhouse Panel Replacement -- Right in Exterior Trim.

  23. Install the right fender.
  24. Refer to Fender Replacement -- Right in Body Front End.

  25. Install the hood.
  26. Refer to Hood Replacement in Body Front End.

  27. Add refrigerant to the system.
  28. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .

  29. Connect the battery negative cable.
  30. Inspect the system for leaks.
