Tools Required

J 36660-A Torque Angle Meter

Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in the Preface section.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the transaxle assembly. Refer to the following:

•	Transmission Replacement in Automatic Transmission - MU5 for all wheel drive automatic transaxle

•	Transmission Replacement in Automatic Transmission - MU4 for 4-speed automatic transaxle

•	Transmission Replacement in Manual Transmission - MK5 for 5-speed manual transaxle

•	Transmission Replacement in Manual Transmission - MTN for 6-speed manual transaxle

3. If equipped with a manual transmission, remove the clutch and pressure plate. Refer to Clutch Assembly Replacement in Clutch.



4. Remove the 8 flywheel retaining bolts.
5. Remove the flywheel from the crankshaft.
6. Clean any grease or dirt from the crankshaft flange outer surface using a suitable solvent.

1. Install the flywheel to the crankshaft.

Notice: Refer to Excessive Adhesive on Flywheel Bolts Notice in the Preface section.




2. Apply GM P/N 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488) or the equivalent, to the flywheel retaining bolt threads (1).



3. For vehicles equipped with an Automatic Transmission, install the flywheel retaining bolts  (1-8) to the crankshaft.

Tighten
Tighten the 8 flywheel retaining bolts in sequence for Automatic Transmission to 83 N·m (61 lb ft).




4. For vehicles equipped with a Manual Transmission, install the flywheel retaining bolts to the crankshaft.

Tighten

1. Tighten the 8 flywheel retaining bolts in sequence for Manual Transmission to 49 N·m (36 lb ft).
2. After the proper torque has been reached, us a J 36660-A and tighten the flywheel bolts an additional 90 degrees.
5. If equipped with a manual transmission, install the clutch and pressure plate. Refer to Clutch Assembly Replacement in Clutch.
6. Install the transaxle assembly. Refer to the following:

•	Transmission Replacement in Automatic Transmission - MU5 for all wheel drive automatic transaxle

•	Transmission Replacement in Automatic Transmission - MU4 for 4-speed automatic transaxle

•	Transmission Replacement in Manual Transmission - MK5 for 5-speed manual transaxle

•	Transmission Replacement in Manual Transmission - MTN for 6-speed manual transaxle

7. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.

Tighten
Tighten the battery cable bolt to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).
