Inflatable Restraint Roof Side Rail Module Replacement - Front Coupe (2nd Design)

Removal Procedure

Notice: Use care when working around the head curtain inflator module. Sharp tools may puncture the curtain airbag. If the head curtain inflator module is damaged in any way, it must be replaced.

  1. Disable the head curtain inflator module. Refer to Disabling the SIR System .

  2. Object Number: 868086  Size: SH

    Notice: When removing the headliner, be careful not to bend the headliner. If the headliner is bent, it will break and leave a wrinkle that cannot be repaired.

    Important:  Before removal, note the position of the door weather strips over the edge of headliner.

  3. Remove the headliner. Refer Headlining Trim Panel Replacement in Interior Trim.

  5. Loosen the inflator bolts and lift to disengage from the cross car beam.

  6. Object Number: 869516  Size: SH
  7. Remove the lower inflator fill tube and tether attachment bolt.

  8. Object Number: 869533  Size: SH
  9. Remove the upper fill tube attachment bolt.

  10. Object Number: 869520  Size: SH
  11. Remove the airbag bolts.

  13. On drivers side only, remove the airbag from the airbag channel by disengaging the straps.

  14. Object Number: 869565  Size: SH
  15. Disengage the inflator module tether from the Velcro® location.

  16. Object Number: 869521  Size: SH
  17. Remove the remaining bolts from the airbag and tether.
  18. Remove the head curtain inflator module from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

Caution: Curtain inflator module fasteners must be replaced after every deployment. After removing the deployed airbag, discard fasteners and replace with fasteners supplied with the new air bag.

Notice: If a vehicle is equipped with a head curtain inflator module ensure that the inflator module and tether are undamaged. If tether or curtain airbag are damaged in any way, they must be replaced.

    Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  1. Slide the inflator bolts into the slots in the cross-car beam and tighten.
  2. Tighten
    Tighten the inflator-to-cross car beam to 8 N·m (71 lb in).

    Caution: If fill tube is damaged or kinked in any way the head curtain inflator module must be replace. Failure to replace can cause personal injury or improper curtain airbag deployment.

  3. Install the lower inflator fill tube and tether the attachment bolt.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the side airbag tether attachment bolt to 8 N·m (71 lb in).

    Caution: Ensure that curtain inflator module tether is not caught behind upper fill tube bolt. Improper routing can cause personal injury or improper curtain airbag deployment.

  5. Install the upper fill tube bolt.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the upper fill tube bolt to 2.5 N·m (22 lb in).

  7. Install the airbag attachment bolts.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the airbag attachment bolt to 8 N·m (71 lb in).

  9. On drivers side only, position the airbag into the channel and fasten straps.

  10. Object Number: 869521  Size: SH
  11. Install the remaining airbag bolts.
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the airbag attachment bolt to 8 N·m (71 lb in).

  13. Route tether below last curtain airbag bolt.

  14. Object Number: 869565  Size: SH
  15. Attach the rear inflator module tether to the Velcro® location.

  16. Object Number: 869468  Size: SH

    Caution: Improper routing of the curtain inflator module tether can cause personal injury or improper curtain airbag deployment

  17. Ensure that the curtain inflator module tether is not hanging below the edge of the headliner.

  19. Install the headliner. Refer Headlining Trim Panel Replacement in Interior Trim.

  20. Object Number: 869564  Size: SH
  21. Enable head curtain inflator module. Refer to Enabling the SIR System .
  22. Install I/P upper trim panel. Refer Instrument Panel Upper Trim Plate Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gages, and Console.

  17. Remove the remaining bolts from the airbag and tether.
  18. Remove the head curtain inflator module from the vehicle.
