Driver or Passenger Seat Recliner Replacement VIN Plant Code 6

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the front seat. Refer to Seat Replacement .
  2. Remove the front seat back. Refer to Front Seat Back Replacement .
  3. Remove the seat back recliner handle.
  4. Remove the seat cushion outer trim panel.
  5. Remove the seat cushion cover J-retainers.
  6. Lift the seat cushion cover in order to access the seat back recliner bolts and cable.
  7. On the outboard seat back recliner perform the following steps:
  8. 7.1. Remove the recliner cable conduit retaining screw.
    7.2. Rotate the cable downward 90 degrees.
    7.3. Remove the cable end from the recliner.

  9. Remove the cable (2) from the inboard seat back recliner mechanism (1) using the following procedure:
  10. 8.1. Unsnap the cable conduit to the inboard recliner.
    8.2. Disconnect the cable (2) by rotating the cable end downward.
  11. Remove the cable from the recliner.
  12. Remove the inboard recliner bolts.
  13. Remove the inboard recliner (1).

Installation Procedure

    Important: When installing the inboard seat back recliner, ensure that the following conditions are met:

       • The seat back recliner arm (1) is in the same position as when removed.
       • The lower edge of the seat back recliner arm is parallel to the rear edge of the recliner seat cushion arm (2).

  1. Install the inboard seat back recliner.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the inboard recliner bolts.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  5. Connect the cable (2) to the inboard seat back recliner (1).
  6. Snap the cable conduit to the inboard recliner.
  7. Connect the cable end to the outboard recliner.
  8. Important: Do not apply excessive force in order to remove the slack. This action may partially unlatch the inboard seat back recliner.

  9. Pull rearward on the cable conduit in order to remove the cable slack.
  10. Rotate the cable upward 90 degrees.
  11. Install the outboard recliner cable conduit retaining screw.
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the screw to 4 N·m (35 lb in).

  13. Inspect the inboard seat back recliner after installing the cable by pulling back and forth on the seat back recliner arm. Ensure that no play is felt. If play is evident, replace the seat back recliner cable. Refer to Front Seat Recliner Replacement .
  14. Inspect the seat back recliner for secure latching.
  15. Install the front seat cushion cover J-retainers.
  16. Install the seat cushion outer trim panel.
  17. Install the seat cushion outer trim panel screws.
  18. Tighten
    Tighten the screws to 1 N·m (9 lb in).

  19. Install the seat back recliner handle.
  20. Install the seat back recliner handle screw.
  21. Tighten
    Tighten the screw to 1 N·m (9 lb in).

  22. Install the front seat back. Refer to Front Seat Back Replacement .
  23. Install the front seat. Refer to Seat Replacement .

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the front bucket seat. Refer to Seat Replacement .
  2. Adjust the seat back cushion cover to gain access for the upper recliner bolts. Refer to Front Seat Back Cushion Cover Replacement .
  3. Remove the seat back recliner handle. Refer to Driver Seat and Passenger Seat Recliner Handle Replacement .
  4. Adjust the seat cushion cover to gain access for the lower recliner bolts. Refer to Front Seat Cushion Cover Replacement .

  5. Object Number: 820965  Size: SH
  6. On the outer recliner perform the following steps:
  7. 5.1. Remove the cable conduit bracket bolt (3).
    5.2. Rotate the cable conduit 90 degrees.
    5.3. Remove the cable end (2) from the recliner (1).

  8. On the inner recliner perform the following steps:
  9. 6.1. Release the cable conduit (2) from the retainer in the recliner (3).
    6.2. Rotate the cable (1) 90 degrees.
    6.3. Remove the cable end (1) from the recliner (3).

  10. Remove the bolts (3,4) from the recliner.
  11. Remove the recliner (2) from the seat cushion frame and the seat back frame (1).

Installation Procedure

  1. Position the recliner (2) to the seat cushion frame and the seat back frame (1).
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the recliner bolts (3,4).
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 24 N·m (18 lb ft).

  5. On the inner recliner perform the following steps:
  6. 3.1. Install the cable end (1) to the recliner (3).
    3.2. Rotate the cable 90 degrees .
    3.3. Install the cable conduit (2) into the retainer on the recliner (3).

  7. On the outer recliner perform the following steps:
  8. 4.1.  Install the cable end (2) to the recliner (1).
    4.2. Rotate the cable conduit 90 degrees.
    4.3. Install the cable conduit bracket bolt (3).

    Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 4 N·m (35 lb in).

  9. Adjust the front seat cushion cover to a desired appearance. Refer to Front Seat Cushion Cover Replacement .
  10. Install the seat back recliner handle. Refer to Driver Seat and Passenger Seat Recliner Handle Replacement .
  11. Adjust the seat back cover to a desired appearance. Refer to Front Seat Back Cushion Cover Replacement .
  12. Install the front bucket seat. Refer to Seat Replacement .
