Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Assemble - Off Vehicle Power Tilt\\Telescope-Column Shift


    Object Number: 588877  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  1. Install the steering column support and secure using 4 support screws.
  2. Tighten
    Tighten the screws to 17 N·m (13 lb ft).

  3. Install 2 TORX® screws into the dampener.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the screws to 1.5 N·m (13 lb in).

    Important: Use the alignment marks from the disassemble procedure. Failure to assemble properly will cause the steering wheel to be turned 180 degrees.

  5. Apply lithium grease to the race and upper shaft assembly.
  6. Align the marks on the race and upper shaft assembly with the lower shaft assembly.
  7. Install the lower shaft assembly to the race and upper shaft assembly.

  9. Install the steering shaft assembly (2) into the tilt head assembly (1).

  10. Object Number: 589412  Size: SH
  11. Install the steering column tilt head assembly (1) and the steering shaft assembly (3) into the steering column jacket assembly (2).

  12. Object Number: 588876  Size: SH
  13. Screw in the lead screw.

  14. Object Number: 420225  Size: SH
  15. Lubricate the pivot pins with synthetic grease.
  16. Install the 2 pivot pins onto the steering column support assembly.


    Object Number: 588849  Size: SH
  17. Align and snap the lower shield assembly onto the steering column.

  18. Object Number: 588846  Size: SH
  19. Install the bracket.
  20. Install 1 TORX® head screw to the bottom of the bracket.
  21. Tighten
    Tighten the screw to 3 N·m (26 lb in).

  22. Install the sensor steer assembly (1)
  23. Install the sensor locator (2)
  24. Install the sensor retainer (3)
  25. Install the steering shaft seal (4)
  26. Install the boot (5)

  27. Object Number: 588841  Size: SH
  28. Slide the tilt and telescope module into position.
  29. Install 1 TORX® head screw.
  30. Tighten
    Tighten the screw to 5 N·m (44 lb in).

    Caution: Improper routing of the wire harness assembly may damage the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil. This may result in a malfunction of the coil, which may cause personal injury.

  31. Install the tilt drive motor assembly and cable only. Refer to Tilt Motor Assembly - Assemble - Off Vehicle .
  32. Install the telescope drive motor assembly and cable only. Refer to Telescope Motor Assembly - Assemble - Off Vehicle .
  33. Install the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly only. Refer to Turn Signal and Multifunction Switch Assembly - Assemble - Off Vehicle .
  34. Install the linear shift assembly, shift lever and the automatic transmission shift lock control only. Refer to Linear Shift Assembly - Assemble - Off Vehicle .
  35. Install the wire harness assembly only. Refer to Wire Harness Assembly - Assemble - Off Vehicle .
  36. Install the lock module assembly. Refer to Electronic Column Lock Module - Assemble - Off Vehicle .
  37. Install the steering column into the vehicle. Refer to Steering Column Replacement .
  38. Install the steering wheel onto the steering column. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
  39. Enable the inflatable restraint steering wheel module. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in SIR.

  11. Install the steering column tilt head assembly (1) and the steering shaft assembly (3) into the steering column jacket assembly (2).

  12. Object Number: 588876  Size: SH
  13. Screw in the lead screw.

  14. Object Number: 626498  Size: SH
  15. Lubricate the pivot pins with synthetic grease.
  16. Install the 2 pivot pins onto the steering column support assembly.

  17. Align and snap the lower shield assembly onto the steering column.

  18. Object Number: 626496  Size: SH
  19. Install the bracket.
  20. Install 1 TORX® head screw to the bottom of the bracket.
  21. Tighten
    Tighten the screw to 3 N·m (26 lb in).

  22. Install the sensor steer assembly (1)
  23. Install the sensor locator (2)

  25. Install the steering shaft seal (4)

  34. Install the wire harness assembly only. Refer to Wire Harness Assembly - Assemble - Off Vehicle .
  35. Install the lock module assembly. Refer to Electronic Column Lock Module - Assemble - Off Vehicle .
  36. Install the steering column into the vehicle. Refer to Steering Column Replacement .
  37. Install the steering wheel onto the steering column. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
  38. Enable the inflatable restraint steering wheel module. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in SIR.

    Object Number: 299888  Size: SH

    Important: Use the alignment marks from the disassemble procedure. Failure to assemble properly will cause the steering wheel to be turned 180 degrees.

  1. Apply lithium grease to the race and upper shaft assembly.
  2. Align the marks on the race and upper shaft assembly with the lower shaft assembly.
  3. Install the lower shaft assembly to the race and upper shaft assembly.

  5. Install the steering shaft assembly (2) into the tilt head assembly (1).

  6. Object Number: 628739  Size: SH
  7. Install the steering column tilt head assembly (1) and the steering shaft assembly (3) into the steering column support assembly (2).

  8. Object Number: 420225  Size: SH

    Important: Replace the steering column support assembly if the steering column support assembly has been staked 3 times.

  9. Lubricate the pivot pins with synthetic grease.
  10. Install the 2 pivot pins onto the steering column support assembly.

    Stake the pins in 3 places.

  11. Install the following parts onto the steering column support assembly:
  12. 7.1. The retaining ring (5)
    7.2. The dual triangle sensor assembly (4)
    7.3. The sensor retainer (3)
    7.4. The steering shaft seal (2)
    7.5. the boot (1)

    Caution: Improper routing of the wire harness assembly may damage the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil. This may result in a malfunction of the coil, which may cause personal injury.

  13. Install the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly only. Refer to Turn Signal and Multifunction Switch Assembly - Assemble - Off Vehicle .
  14. Install the wire harness assembly only. Refer to Wire Harness Assembly - Assemble - Off Vehicle .
  15. Install the tilt spring only. Refer to Tilt Spring - Assemble - Off Vehicle .
  16. Install the lock module assembly. Refer to Electronic Column Lock Module - Assemble - Off Vehicle .
  17. Install the steering column into the vehicle. Refer to Steering Column Replacement .
  18. Install the steering wheel onto the steering column. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
  19. Enable the inflatable restraint steering wheel module. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in SIR.

  1. Apply lithium grease to the race and upper shaft assembly.
  2. Align the marks on the race and upper shaft assembly with the lower shaft assembly.
  3. Install the lower shaft assembly to the race and upper shaft assembly.

  5. Install the steering shaft assembly (2) into the tilt head assembly (1).

  6. Object Number: 628739  Size: SH
  7. Install the steering column tilt head assembly (1) and the steering shaft assembly (3) into the steering column support assembly (2).

  8. Object Number: 420225  Size: SH

    Important: Replace the steering column support assembly if the steering column support assembly has been staked 3 times.

  9. Lubricate the pivot pins with synthetic grease.
  10. Install the 2 pivot pins onto the steering column support assembly.

    Stake the pivot pins in 3 places.

  11. If a dual triangle sensor assembly is present, do the following steps. If not, proceed to the next step.
  12. Install the following parts to the steering column support assembly:

    7.1. The retaining ring (5).
    7.2. The dual triangle sensor assembly (4).
    7.3. The sensor retainer (3).
    7.4. The steering shaft seal (2).
    7.5. the boot seal (1).

  13. Install the following parts to the steering column support assembly:
  14. 8.1. The boot seal (5).
    8.2. The retaining ring (4).
    8.3. The sensor retainer (3).
    8.4. The steering shaft seal (2).
    8.5. The boot (1).

    Caution: Improper routing of the wire harness assembly may damage the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil. This may result in a malfunction of the coil, which may cause personal injury.

  15. Install the linear shift assembly, the automatic transmission shift lock control assembly and switch lever only. Refer to Linear Shift Assembly - Assemble - Off Vehicle .
  16. Install the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly only. Refer to Turn Signal and Multifunction Switch Assembly - Assemble - Off Vehicle .
  17. Install the wire harness assembly only. Refer to Wire Harness Assembly - Assemble - Off Vehicle .
  18. Install the tilt spring only. Refer to Tilt Spring - Assemble - Off Vehicle .
  19. Install the lock module assembly. Refer to Electronic Column Lock Module - Assemble - Off Vehicle .
  20. Install the steering column into the vehicle. Refer to Steering Column Replacement .
  21. Install the steering wheel onto the steering column. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
  22. Enable the inflatable restraint steering wheel module. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in SIR.
