Cause

Action

The shaft assembly is damaged.

Repair or replace the shaft as needed. Refer to Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle and Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Assemble - Off Vehicle .

The shear bolts are damaged.

Replace the shear bolts. Refer to Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle and Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Assemble - Off Vehicle .

The housing assembly is damaged.

Replace the housing assembly. Refer to Steering Column Tilt Head Housing - Disassemble - Off Vehicle and Steering Column Tilt Head Housing - Assemble - Off Vehicle .

The auto trans shift lock control system is damaged.

Repair or replace the auto trans shift lock control, as needed. Refer to Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control Disassemble - Off Vehicle and Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control Assemble - Off Vehicle .

The ignition switch assembly is damaged.

Replace the ignition switch assembly. Refer to Ignition and Key Alarm Switch Assembly - Disassemble - Off Vehicle and Ignition and Key Alarm Switch Assembly - Assemble - Off Vehicle .

The shift linkage is not adjusted properly.

Adjust the shift linkage. Refer to Shift Cable Replacement in Automatic Transmission.

The park lock cable is not adjusted properly.

Adjust the park lock cable.

The shift lever is not in the PARK (P) position.

Place the gear shift in the PARK (P) position.

The key is incorrect, bent, or twisted.

Replace the key. Refer to Key and Lock Cylinder Coding in General Information.
