Removal Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 38613-A Camshaft Timing Clamps
    • J 38614 Camshaft Sprocket Holding Tool
  1. Remove the upper intake manifold. Refer to Upper Intake Manifold Replacement .
  2. Notice: Siphon the power steering fluid from the reservoir before disconnecting the lines in order to avoid spilling fluid on the timing belt cover. Use shop rags when disconnecting the lines in order to ensure that any remaining fluid does not contact the timing belt cover. Power steering fluid can damage the timing belt.

  3. Remove the power steering pump. Refer to SECTION 3B.
  4. Remove the PCM electrical connectors.
  5. Remove the right camshaft timing belt cover. Refer to Timing Belt Cover Replacement .
  6. Remove the left camshaft timing belt cover. Refer to Timing Belt Cover Replacement .
  7. Inspect the camshaft drive for signs of excessive wear. Take note of any fluid intrusion.
  8. Remove the breather hose at the rear camshaft cover.

  9. Object Number: 57305 Size: SH
  10. Disconnect the spark plug wires from the spark plugs. Take note of the position of the wires before removal.
  11. Remove the left camshaft carrier cover. Refer to Camshaft Carrier Cover Replacement .
  12. Remove the right camshaft carrier cover. Refer to Camshaft Carrier Cover Replacement .
  13. Remove the wiring harness cover at the right strut tower.
  14. Remove the timing belt. Refer to Timing Belt Replacement .
  15. Install the J 38613-A to the right rear bank and to the left front camshaft sprockets.

  16. Object Number: 57223 Size: SH
  17. Remove the bolts and the side plate from the camshaft timing belt tensioner actuator.
  18. Rotate the camshaft timing belt tensioner from the tensioner pulley socket. Rotate the camshaft timing belt tensioner out of the mounting base.
  19. Notice: Do not install the rod tip or the tensioner boot in the jaws of the vise. This could cause damage to the tensioner boot assembly.

  20. Do not install the rod tip or the tensioner boot in the jaws of the vise. This could cause damage to the tensioner boot assembly.
  21. Position the tensioner actuator in a vertical position in the vise with the rod tip down. Lightly clamp the tensioner actuator body in the vise.
  22. Allow the oil to drain to the boot end, for at least 5 minutes prior to refilling.
  23. Important: The tensioner actuator uses a tapered bushing between the tensioner actuator and the mounting base. Do not lose or damage the bushing when removing the tensioner actuator.

    Object Number: 57336 Size: SH
  24. Straighten out a standard paper clip (0.032 in diameter, no serrations) to a minimum straight length of 47 mm (1.85 in). Form a double loop in the remaining end of the paper clip.

  25. Object Number: 57338 Size: SH
  26. Remove the rubber end from the rear of the tensioner actuator. The tensioner actuator is filled with oil and removal may allow oil to escape. Do not remove the vent plug.
  27. Push the paper clip through the center hole in the vent plug and into the pilot hole.
  28. Insert a small screwdriver into the screw slot inside the tensioner actuator, behind the rubber end plug.
  29. Retract the tensioner actuator plunger by rotating the screw in a clockwise direction until it is fully retracted. Push on the paper clip and slowly rotate the screw counterclockwise until the paper clip engages.

Installation Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 38613-A Camshaft Timing Clamps
    • J 38614 Camshaft Sprocket Holding Tool
  1. If the tensioner actuator oil has been lost, fill the tensioner actuator with SAE 5W30 Mobil 1 (or equivalent) synthetic engine oil through the end hole. Only when the tensioner actuator is fully retracted and the pin is installed, can the oil be filled to the bottom of the plug hole.
  2. Install the rubber end plug to the rear of the tensioner actuator. Push until it is flush and snapped into place. Ensure that the end plug has sealed against the case.
  3. Install the tensioner actuator bushing into the side plate.
  4. Inspect the bushings and the appropriate holes in order to ensure that they are clean. Do not lubricate.
  5. Important: Ensure that the tapered fulcrum of the tensioner actuator is properly seated in the tensioner actuator bracket bushing.

  6. Install the tensioner actuator and side plate.
  7. Install the bolts.
  8. Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

Important: Rotate the pulley into the belt a maximum of 15 N·m (11 lb ft) in order to allow the engagement of the actuator shaft into the pulley arm socket.

  9. Pull the lock pin and discard. Retorque the pulley 15 N·m (11 lb ft) counterclockwise in order to seat the pulley into the belt.
  10. Install both right hand (rear bank) camshaft sprockets.
  11. Install the bolts.
  12. Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 130 N·m (96 lb ft).

  13. Remove the J 38613-A from the right hand (rear bank) camshaft carrier.
  14. Rotate the crankshaft 360° clockwise while looking at the front of the engine and align the crankshaft reference marks.
  15. Ensure that both the right hand (rear bank) camshaft flats are down.
  16. Install both of the left hand (front bank) camshaft sprockets.
  17. Tighten
Tighten the left hand (front bank) camshaft sprockets to 130 N·m (96 lb ft).

  18. Remove the J 38613-A from the left hand camshaft carrier.
  19. Rotate the crankshaft 720° clockwise while looking at the front of the engine in order to seat the timing belt and verify the correct timing.
  20. Ensure that both the camshaft flatspots are up on one bank and down on the opposing bank.
  21. Install the right camshaft carrier cover. Refer to Camshaft Carrier Cover Replacement .
  22. Install the left camshaft carrier cover. Refer to Camshaft Carrier Cover Replacement .
  23. Install the breather hose from the rear camshaft cover and the crankcase vent from the breather manifold.
