Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 1265583  Size: SH
  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  2. Remove the rear wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  3. Remove the backing plate. Refer to Rear Brake Backing Plate Replacement .
  4. On vehicles equipped with an antilock braking system (ABS), remove the ABS speed sensor and disconnect the ABS sensor line. Refer to Rear Wheel Speed Sensor Replacement .

  5. Object Number: 1265584  Size: SH
  6. Remove the parking brake cable bracket nuts and disconnect the parking brake. Refer to Park Brake Cable Replacement .
  7. Disconnect the brake pipes from the brake hoses at the rear axle brackets by removing the retainer clip. Cap or tape the brake hose openings to prevent entry of foreign matter. Unclip the brake hose from the rear axle brackets.

  9. Place support jacks under the arms of the rear axle and raise the rear axle arms slightly.
  10. Remove the coil springs and insulators. Refer to Coil Spring Replacement .
  11. Remove the rear shock absorbers. Refer to Shock Absorber Replacement .

  13. Remove the rear axle support bolts and nuts from the underbody.

  14. Object Number: 1265585  Size: SH

    Important: Two technicians and jack stands must hold the rear axle during removal of the rear axle support bolts and nuts. Failure to support the rear axle properly can result in personal injury.

  15. Lower the support jacks and remove the rear axle.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the rear axle.
  2. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 1265586  Size: SH
  3. Install the rear axle support bolts and nuts to underbody.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 110 N·m (18 lb ft).

  5. Install the rear shock absorber.
  6. Install the coil springs and insulator.

  8. Connect the brake pipes to the brake hoses at the rear axle brackets using the retaining clip.
  9. Install the parking brake cable bracket nuts, then connect the parking brake.

  10. Object Number: 1265583  Size: SH
  11. On vehicles equipped, install ABS speed sensor and connect the ABS sensor line.
  12. Install the backing plate. Refer to Rear Brake Backing Plate Replacement .
  13. Install the rear wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  14. Bleed the brake system. Inspect the leaks.
  15. Adjust the rear wheel brakes.
