Removal Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 38606 Valve Spring Compressor
    • J 26999-10 Compression Gauge Adapter
    • J 26999-30 Compression Gauge Adapter

  1. Remove the air cleaner assembly with the mounting brackets from the engine assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls-6.5L-L65.
  2. Disconnect the battery negative cables from the batteries. Refer to Battery Cable Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  3. Remove the upper intake manifold from the lower intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  4. Remove the lower intake manifold from the cylinder heads. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  5. Remove the valve rocker arm cover from the cylinder head. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .
  6. Remove the valve rocker arm shafts and the push rods from the cylinder head. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm, Shaft, and Push Rod Replacement .
  7. Remove the glow plugs from the cylinder being serviced.
  8. • If servicing a cylinder on the left cylinder head, refer to Glow Plug Replacement - Left Side in Engine Controls-6.5L.
    • If servicing a cylinder on the right cylinder head, refer to Glow Plug Replacement - Right Side in Engine Controls-6.5L.

    Important: Rotate the engine so that the piston is at the bottom of stroke.

  9. Use the J 26999-10 and apply compressed air into the cylinder being serviced.
  10. Tap the top of the valve with a mallet in order to loosen the valve keys.
  11. Use the J 38606 in order to compress the valve spring.
  12. Compress the valve spring and remove the valve keys.

  14. Remove the valve springs, cap and rotor from the cylinder head.
  15. Remove the valve stem oil seal from the valve guide.
  16. Remove the J 26999-10 from the valve spring assembly.

Installation Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 38606 Valve Spring Compressor
    • J 26999-10 Compression Gauge Adapter
    • J 26999-30 Compression Gauge Adapter

    Notice: Air pressure should remain applied to the cylinder for installation.

    Important: Ensure that the O-ring seal on the intake valve is not twisted and is installed in the correct groove.

    Engine damage could occur if the seal is not installed correctly.

  1. Install the new valve stem oil seals.
  2. Install the valve spring with the damper.
  3. Install the shield.
  4. Install the cap or the rotator.

  6. Use the following steps in order to install the valve keys:
  7. 5.1. Apply a small amount of grease to the valve keys. This will hold the valve keys in place.
    5.2. Install the valve keys.
    5.3. Carefully release the valve spring pressure. Ensure that the valve keys remain in place.
    5.4. Remove the J 26999-10 and the J 38606 .
  8. Install the glow plugs in the cylinder being serviced.
  9. • If servicing a cylinder on the left cylinder head, refer to Glow Plug Replacement - Left Side in Engine Controls-6.5L.
    • If servicing a cylinder on the right cylinder head, refer to Glow Plug Replacement - Right Side in Engine Controls-6.5L.
  10. Install the push rods and the valve rocker arm shaft to the cylinder head. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm, Shaft, and Push Rod Replacement
  11. Install the valve rocker arm cover on the cylinder head. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .
  12. Install the lower intake manifold to the cylinder heads. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  13. Install the upper intake manifold to the lower intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  14. Install the air cleaner assembly with the mounting brackets to the engine assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls-6.5L-L65.
  15. Connect the battery negative cables to the batteries. Refer to Battery Cable Replacement in Engine Electrical.
