Cylinder Head Replacement Left

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 441261  Size: SH
  1. Drain the engine coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
  2. Remove the lower intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  3. Remove the right exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  4. Remove the valve rocker arms and pushrods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .
  5. Remove the cylinder head bolts (1).
  6. Remove the left cylinder head (2).

  7. Object Number: 441262  Size: SH
  8. Remove the left cylinder head gasket (1).
  9. Disassemble the cylinder head. Refer to Cylinder Head Disassemble .

Installation Procedure

Tools Required

J 36660-A Torque Angle Meter

    Important: The arrow on the gasket must point to the front of the engine. Failure to install the gasket properly will cause gasket failure and possible engine failure.


    Object Number: 441262  Size: SH
  1. Assemble the cylinder head. Refer to Cylinder Head Assemble .
  2. Install a new left cylinder head gasket (1) to the alignment pins (2).

  3. Object Number: 441261  Size: SH
  4. Install the left cylinder head (2).

  5. Object Number: 38826  Size: SH
  6. Torque the cylinder head bolts following the given sequence.
  7. Install the cylinder head bolts.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the cylinder head bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft) in sequence shown. Use the J 36660-A to torque the cylinder head bolts an additional 120 degrees.

  9. Install the valve rocker arms and pushrods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .
  10. Install the left exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  11. Install the lower intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  12. Refill the engine coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
  13. Change the engine oil and filter. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement .

Cylinder Head Replacement Right

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 441261  Size: SH
  1. Drain the engine coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
  2. Remove the lower intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  3. Remove the right exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement .
  4. Remove the valve rocker arms and the pushrods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .
  5. Remove the cylinder head bolts (1).
  6. Remove the right cylinder head (3).

  8. Remove the right cylinder head gasket (3).
  9. Disassemble the cylinder head. Refer to Cylinder Head Disassemble .

Installation Procedure

J 36660-A Torque Angle Meter

  1. Install the new right cylinder head gasket (3) to the alignment pins (2).

  2. Object Number: 441261  Size: SH
  3. Install the right cylinder head (3).

  4. Object Number: 38826  Size: SH
  5. Tighten the cylinder head bolts following the given sequence.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the cylinder head bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft) in sequence shown. Use the J 36660-A to torque the cylinder head bolts an additional 120 degrees.

  7. Install the pushrods and the valve rocker arms. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement
  8. Install the right exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  9. Install the lower intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  10. Refill the engine coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
  11. Change the engine oil and filter. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement .
