Removal Procedure

    Caution: Refer to Brake Dust Caution in the Preface section.

    Caution: Refer to Brake Fluid Irritant Caution in the Preface section.

    Notice: Refer to Brake Fluid Effects on Paint and Electrical Components Notice in the Preface section.

  1. Use a siphon in order to remove half of the brake fluid from the reservoir.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  3. Remove the rear tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .

  4. Object Number: 817347  Size: SH
  5. Place a container below the brake hose (1) in order to catch the brake fluid.
  6. Remove the rear brake hose fitting (3) and the washer from the caliper.

  7. Object Number: 817335  Size: SH
  8. Remove the caliper bolts (1,8).
  9. Remove the caliper from the vehicle.
  10. Remove the brake pads and the hardware from the caliper. Refer to Rear Disc Brake Pads Replacement .

Inspection Procedure

  1. Clean and inspect the disc brake caliper components. Repair or replace the components as necessary. Refer to Rear Disc Brake Mounting and Hardware Inspection .
  2. Clean and inspect the caliper. Repair or replace the components as necessary. Refer to Brake Caliper Inspection .

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 817335  Size: SH
  1. Ensure the caliper slide pins (2, 9) are lubricated with lithium soap base glycol grease or Silicone Brake Lubricant, GM P/N 89021536, ACDelco P/N 89021537 (Canadian P/N 89021538), or equivalent. If necessary, refer to Rear Disc Brake Hardware Replacement .
  2. Install the brake pads and the hardware to the caliper (10). Refer to Rear Disc Brake Pads Replacement .
  3. Install the caliper to the vehicle.
  4. Install the slide pins and the boots to the caliper.
  5. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  6. Install the caliper bolts (1,8).
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 46.6 N·m (34.37 lb ft).

  8. Install a NEW washer to the flexible hose lock hole in the caliper.
  9. Install the brake hose to the caliper.
  10. Install the brake hose fitting (2).
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the fitting to 29 N·m (21.4 lb ft).

  12. Install the rear tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  13. Lower the vehicle.
  14. Caution: Do not move the vehicle until a firm brake pedal is obtained. Failure to obtain a firm pedal before moving vehicle may result in personal injury.

  15. With the engine OFF, gradually apply and release the brake pedal several times in order to position the caliper pistons and the brake pads.
  16. Fill the master cylinder reservoir. Refer to Master Cylinder Reservoir Filling .
  17. Bleed the brake system. Refer to Hydraulic Brake System Bleeding .
