Removal Procedure
- Discharge the air conditioning system. Refer to SECTION 1B.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to
Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing
any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to
the vehicle or its components.

- Disconnect the positive battery cable.
- Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to SECTION 0A.
- Remove the front wheels and tires. Refer to SECTION 3E.
- Drain the coolant. Refer to
Cooling System Draining and Filling
in Engine Cooling.
- Drain the engine oil.
- Remove the catalytic converter. Refer to
Catalytic Converter Replacement
in Engine Exhaust.
- For the automatic transmission, remove the converter bolts.
- Remove the front fascia lower deflectors. Refer to SECTION 10-5.
- Remove the stabilizer bar bolts. Refer to SECTION 3C.
- Remove the accessory drive belt. Refer to
Drive Belt Replacement
.
- Remove the air conditioning hose from the condenser and the compressor.
Refer to SECTION 1B.
- For the automatic transmission, remove the transmission fluid
cooler lines from the radiator.
- Remove the lower radiator hose from the radiator. Refer to
Radiator Hose Replacement
in
Engine Cooling.
- Remove the lower heater hose from the water pump. Refer to
Water Pump Replacement
in Engine
Cooling.
- Remove the electrical ground straps from the right side of the
engine block.
- Remove the shift linkage from the transmission.
- Remove the propeller shaft after match marking. Refer to SECTION 4A.
- Remove the torque arm from the transmission. Refer to SECTION 3D.
- Remove the intermediate steering shaft from the rack and pinion.
Refer to SECTION 3F4.
- Remove the electrical ground straps from the left side of the
frame rail.
- Remove the electrical connectors from the wheel speed sensors.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Remove the air intake duct.
- Remove the fuel lines from the fuel rail.
- Remove the accelerator control/cruise control servo cable adjuster.
Refer to SECTION 5E2.
- Remove the cruise and accelerator control cables from the throttle
body.
- Remove the upper and lower radiator hoses from the water pump.

- Remove the brake booster vacuum hose.
- Remove the upper heater hose from the water pump. Refer to
Water Pump Replacement
in Engine
Cooling.
- Remove the engine coolant air bleed pipe hose from the radiator.

- Remove the air conditioning receiver and the dehydrator hose from
the condenser. Refer to SECTION 1B.
- Remove the air conditioning hose from the expansion tube. Refer
to SECTION 1B.
- Remove the brake lines from the antilock brake system (ABS) brake
combination valve. Refer to SECTION 5.
- Remove the power steering reservoir and reposition. Refer to SECTION 1B.
- Remove the brake lines and the clips from the ABS hydraulic modulator.
Refer to SECTION 5.
- Remove the right-hand body hinge pillar trim panel. Refer
to SECTION 10-5.
- Remove the three engine wiring harness connectors (Blue, black,
white connectors) and the evaporator temperature sensor connector.
- Remove the forward lamp wiring harness connectors.
- Remove the powertrain control module (PCM) and harness. Place
the PCM and the harness on top of the engine.
- Remove the engine wire harness through the front of the dash.
- Place the harness on top of the engine.
- Remove the positive lead at the generator.
- Remove the positive lead at the junction block.
- Remove the negative lead at the mounting stud, located next to
the junction block.
- Remove the lower shock attachment bolts and the nuts from the
lower control arm.
- Remove the upper control arm ball stud from the steering knuckle.
Refer to SECTION 3C.
- Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to SECTION 0A.
- Position the lift table under the engine and the front crossmember.
Use the J 39580 or the equivalent.
- Remove the front crossmember and the transmission support bolts.
Refer to SECTION 10-3.
- Raise the vehicle from the front crossmember engine and the transmission.
- Secure the struts to the front crossmember.
- Remove the transmission.
- Remove the clutch housing and the clutch from a manual transmission
vehicle.
- Remove the power steering lines from the power steering pump.
Refer to SECTION 3B.
- Remove the hoses from the air conditioning compressor. Refer to
SECTION 1B.
- Remove the air conditioning compressor bolts and the compressor.
Refer to SECTION 1B.
- Remove the engine mount through-bolts.
- Remove the engine from the front crossmember.
Installation Procedure
- Install the engine to the front crossmember.
- Install the engine mount through-bolts.
- Install the power steering lines to the power steering pump. Refer
to SECTION 3B.
- Install the air conditioning compressor and the bolts. Refer to
SECTION 1B.
- Install the hoses to the air conditioning compressor. Refer to
SECTION 1B.
- Install the clutch housing and the clutch.
- Install the transmission. Refer to
Transmission Installation
or
Transmission Installation
.
- Position the engine lift table and install the engine, transmission
and the engine frame by lowering the vehicle to the front crossmember.
- Install the front crossmember and the transmission support bolts.
Refer to SECTION 10-3.
- Install the engine lift table.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Install the upper control arm ball stud to the steering knuckle.
Refer to SECTION 3C.
- Install the lower shock attachment bolts and nuts to the lower
control arm.
- Install the negative lead at the mounting stud, located next to
the junction block.
- Install the positive lead at the generator.
Important: When reinstalling the engine wiring harness back through the front of
the dash, the rubber grommet must be installed properly to ensure correct
sealing. Replace the grommet if the grommet is torn or damaged.
- Install the engine wire harness through the front of the dash.
- Install the PCM and the harness.
- Install the forward lamp harness connectors.
- Install the wiring harness connectors.
- Install the right-hand body hinge pillar trim panel. Refer to
SECTION 10-5.
- Install the brake lines and the clips to the ABS hydraulic modulator.
Refer to SECTION 5.
- Install the brake lines to the ABS brake combination valve. Refer
to SECTION 5.
- Install the air conditioning hose to the expansion tube. Refer
to SECTION 1B.
- Install the air conditioning receiver and the dehydrator hose
to the condenser. Refer to SECTION 1B.
- Install the engine coolant air bleed pipe hose to the radiator.

- Install the brake booster vacuum hose.
- Install the upper and lower radiator hose to the water pump. Refer
to
Radiator Hose Replacement
in Engine Cooling.
- Install the accelerator control/cruise control servo cable adjuster.
Refer to SECTION 5E2.
- Install the cruise and the accelerator control cables to the throttle
body.
- Install the fuel lines to the fuel rail.
- Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to SECTION 0A.
- Install the electrical connectors to the wheel speed sensor.
- Install the electrical ground straps to the left side of the frame
rail.
- Install the intermediate steering shaft to rack and pinion. Refer
to SECTION 3F4.
- Install the torque arm to transmission. Refer to SECTION 3D.
- Install the propeller shaft. Refer to SECTION 4A.
- Install the shift linkage to the transmission.
- Install the electrical ground straps to the right side of the
engine block.
- Install the lower heater hose to the water pump. Refer to
Water Pump Replacement
in Engine
Cooling.
- Install the lower radiator hose to the radiator. Refer to
Radiator Hose Replacement
in
Engine Cooling.
- For the automatic transmission, install the transmission fluid
cooler lines to radiator.
- Install the accessory drive belt. Refer to
Drive Belt Replacement
.
- Install the air conditioning hose to the condenser and the compressor.
Refer to SECTION 1B.
- Install the stabilizer bar bolts. Refer to SECTION 3C.
- Install the front fascia lower deflectors. Refer to SECTION 10-5.
- Install the converter bolts on an automatic transmission engine.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Refill with engine oil.
- Refill with engine coolant. Refer to
Cooling System Draining and Filling
in Engine Cooling.
- Install the front wheels and tires. Refer to SECTION 3E.
- Connect the positive battery cable.
- Connect the negative battery cable.
- Bleed the brake system. Refer to SECTION 5E1.
- Bleed the power steering system. Refer to SECTION 3B.
- Charge the air conditioning system. Refer to SECTION 1B.
- Install the air intake duct.
- Align the wheels. Refer to SECTION 3A.
