DTC Types

DTC's are catagorized by type. The DTC type relates to how the MIL operates and how the fault data is stored when a particular DTC fails. In some cases there may be exceptions to this structure. Therefore, it is important to read the Action Taken When the DTC Sets and Conditions for Clearing the MIL/DTC in the supporting text when diagnosing the system.

The following list describes the general characteristics of each DTC type:

    • Type A DTCs are emissions related. The AF ECU performs the following actions at the time of the first fail:
       - Turns on the MIL
       - Stores the DTC in memory
       - Captures Freeze Frame data
    • Type B DTCs are emissions related. The first fail and any subsequent failures are handled differently.
       - The AF ECU performs the following actions at the time of the first fail:
   • Does not turn on the MIL
   • Stores the DTC in memory as Failed Last Test
   • Captures Freeze Frame data
       - The AF ECU performs the following actions at the time of the second fail if the fault is active for 2 consecutive driving cycles:
   • Turns on the MIL
   • Stores the DTC in memory (the DTC will now appear in History)
   • Updates Freeze Frame data
       - The AFECU performs the following actions at the time of a second failure that is not on a consecutive trip:
   • Does not turn on the MIL
   • Stores the DTC in memory as Failed Last Test
   • Does NOT update Freeze Frame data
    • Type C DTCs do not turn on the MIL, may turn on an auxiliary service lamp or display a message on the IP and are not emissions related. Type D DTCs are now refered to as Type C DTCs. The AF ECU does not support Type C DTCs.

The AF ECU does not support Failure Records data. If the AF ECU and the vehicles gasoline Control Module (VCM / PCM or ECM) have set and stored the same DTC the vehicles gasoline Control Module may have stored Failure Records that may aid in diagnosis for the DTC.

The following DTC List refers to Alternative Fuels Engine Control Unit (AF ECU) DTCs only. Refer to the Engine Controls DTC List (gasoline) for DTCs that are set by the vehicles gasoline Control Module (VCM / PCM or ECM).
