Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle Power Tilt\\Telescope-Column Shift

Tools Required

J 21854-01 Pivot Pin Remover

  1. Remove the lock module assembly. Refer to Electronic Column Lock Module - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .
  2. Remove the linear shift assembly, shift lever and the automatic transmission shift lock control only. Refer to Linear Shift Assembly - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .
  3. Remove the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly only. Refer to Turn Signal and Multifunction Switch Assembly - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .
  4. Remove the wire harness assembly only. Refer to Wire Harness Assembly - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .
  5. Remove the telescope drive motor assembly and cable only. Refer to Telescope Motor Assembly - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .
  6. Remove the tilt drive motor assembly and cable only. Refer to Tilt Motor Assembly - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .

  7. Object Number: 588841  Size: SH
  8. Remove 1 TORX® head screw from the tilt and telescope module.
  9. Slide the tilt and telescope module out from the steering column.

  10. Object Number: 420221  Size: SH
  11. Remove the boot (5)
  12. Remove the steering shaft seal (4)
  13. Remove the sensor retainer (3)
  14. Remove the sensor locator (2)
  15. Remove the sensor steer assembly (1)

  16. Object Number: 588846  Size: SH
  17. Remove 1 TORX® head screw from the bottom bracket.
  18. Remove the bracket.

  19. Object Number: 588849  Size: SH
  20. Gently pry the lower shield assembly off of the steering column.

  21. Object Number: 420219  Size: SH
  22. Remove 2 pivot pins (1) from the steering column support assembly using J 21854-01 .

  23. Object Number: 588876  Size: SH
  24. Unscrew the lead screw.

  25. Object Number: 589412  Size: SH
  26. Remove the tilt head assembly (1) from the steering column support assembly (2) with the steering shaft (3) still attached.

  27. Object Number: 589411  Size: SH
  28. Remove the tilt head assembly (1) from the steering shaft assembly (2).

  29. Object Number: 306318  Size: SH

    Important: Mark the race and upper shaft (1) and the lower steering shaft (2) to ensure proper assembly. Failure to assemble properly will cause the steering wheel to be turned 180 degrees.

  30. Tilt the upper shaft assembly 90 degrees to the steering shaft assembly and disengage.

  31. Object Number: 589407  Size: SH
  32. Remove 2 TORX® screws from the dampener.

  33. Object Number: 588877  Size: SH
  34. Remove and discard 4 support screws from the steering column support.
  35. Remove the steering column support.
  36. Check the steering column for accident damage.

    Object Number: 626494  Size: SH

    Caution: This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause the following conditions:

       • Air bag deployment
       • Personal injury
       • Unnecessary SIR system repairs
    In order to avoid the above conditions, observe the following guidelines:
       • Refer to SIR Component Views in order to determine if you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring.
       • If you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System.

  1. Disable the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in SIR.
  2. Remove the steering wheel from the column. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
  3. Remove the steering column from the vehicle. Refer to Steering Column Replacement .
  4. Remove the lock module assembly. Refer to Electronic Column Lock Module - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .
  5. Remove the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly only. Refer to Turn Signal and Multifunction Switch Assembly - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .
  6. Remove the wire harness assembly only. Refer to Wire Harness Assembly - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .
  7. Remove the telescope drive motor assembly and cable only. Refer to Telescope Motor Assembly - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .
  8. Remove the tilt drive motor assembly and cable only. Refer to Tilt Motor Assembly - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .
  9. Remove 1 TORX® head screw from the tilt and telescope module.
  10. Slide the tilt and telescope module out from the steering column.

  12. Remove the boot seal (5)
  13. Remove the steering shaft seal (4)
  14. Remove the sensor retainer (3)
  15. Remove the sensor locator (2)
  16. Remove the sensor steer assembly (1)

  18. Remove 1 TORX® head screw from the bottom bracket.
  19. Remove the bracket.

  20. Object Number: 588849  Size: SH
  21. Gently pry the lower shield assembly off of the steering column.

  22. Object Number: 420219  Size: SH
  23. Remove 2 pivot pins (1) from the steering column support assembly using J 21854-01 .

  24. Object Number: 588876  Size: SH
  25. Unscrew the lead screw.

  26. Object Number: 626497  Size: SH
  27. Remove the tilt head assembly (1) from the steering column support assembly (2) with the steering shaft (3) still attached.

  28. Object Number: 589411  Size: SH
  29. Remove the tilt head assembly (1) from the steering shaft assembly (2).

  30. Object Number: 306318  Size: SH

    Important: Mark the race and upper shaft (1) and the lower steering shaft (2) to ensure proper assembly. Failure to assemble properly will cause the steering wheel to be turned 180 degrees.

  31. Tilt the upper shaft assembly 90 degrees to the steering shaft assembly and disengage.

  33. Remove 2 TORX® screws from the dampener.

  2. Remove the steering wheel from the column. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
  3. Remove the steering column from the vehicle. Refer to Steering Column Replacement .
  4. Remove the lock module assembly. Refer to Electronic Column Lock Module - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .
  5. Remove the wire harness assembly only. Refer to Wire Harness Assembly - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .
  6. Remove the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly only. Refer to Turn Signal and Multifunction Switch Assembly - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .
  7. Remove the linear shift assembly, the automatic transmission shift lock control assembly and the shift lever only. Refer to Linear Shift Assembly - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .
  8. Remove the tilt spring only. Refer to Tilt Spring - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .
  9. If a dual triangle sensor assembly is present perform the following steps. If not proceed to the next step.
  10. Remove the following parts from the steering column support assembly:

    9.1. The boot (1).
    9.2. The steering shaft seal (2).
    9.3. The sensor retainer  (3).
    9.4. The retaining ring (4).
    9.5. The sensor (5).

  11. Remove the following parts from the steering column support assembly:
  12. 10.1. The boot (1).
    10.2. The steering shaft seal (2).
    10.3. The sensor retainer (3).
    10.4. The retaining ring (4).
    10.5. The boot seal (5).

  13. Remove the 2 pivot pins (1) from the steering column support assembly using J 21854-01 .

  14. Object Number: 628739  Size: SH
  15. Remove the tilt head assembly (1) from the steering column support assembly (2) with the steering shaft (3) still attached.

  16. Object Number: 516127  Size: SH
  17. Remove the tilt head assembly (1) from the steering shaft assembly (2).

  18. Object Number: 306318  Size: SH

    Important: Mark the race and upper shaft (1) and the lower steering shaft (2) to ensure proper assembly. Failure to assemble properly will cause the steering wheel to be turned 180 degrees.

  19. Tilt the upper shaft assembly 90 degrees to the steering shaft assembly and disengage.

  4. Inspect the steering column for accident damage. Refer to Steering Column Accident Damage Inspection - Off Vehicle .
  5. Remove the lock module assembly. Refer to Electronic Column Lock Module - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .
  6. Remove the wire harness assembly only. Refer to Wire Harness Assembly - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .
  7. Remove the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly only. Refer to Turn Signal and Multifunction Switch Assembly - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .
  8. Remove the tilt spring. Refer to Tilt Spring - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .
  9. Remove the following parts from the steering column support assembly:
  10. 9.1. The boot (1).
    9.2. The steering shaft seal (2).
    9.3. The sensor retainer (3).
    9.4. The dual triangle sensor assembly (4).
    9.5. The retaining ring (5).

  11. Remove the 2 pivot pins (1) from the steering column support assembly using J 21854-01 .

  12. Object Number: 628739  Size: SH
  13. Remove the tilt head assembly (1) from the steering column support assembly (2) with the steering shaft (3) still attached.

  14. Object Number: 516127  Size: SH
  15. Remove the tilt head assembly (1) from the steering shaft assembly (2).

  16. Object Number: 306318  Size: SH

    Important: Mark the race and upper shaft (1) and the lower steering shaft (2) to ensure proper assembly. Failure to assemble properly will cause the steering wheel to be turned 180 degrees.

  17. Tilt the upper shaft assembly 90 degrees to the steering shaft assembly and disengage.
