Instrument Cluster (IPC) System Check

  1. Close all of the vehicle's doors.
  2. Leave the safety belt unbuckled.
  3. Verify the gear selector is in the PARK position.
  4. Turn the ignition switch to the START position and then to the ON position. Do not start the engine.

A bulb check of the following indicators is performed (the indicators illuminate briefly)

    • ABS
    • Air Bag
    • Battery Charge
    • Brake Fluid
    • Engine Coolant Temperature
    • Engine Oil Pressure
    • Park Brake
    • Security
    •  Gages Inoperative - All .
    •  Battery Charge Indicator Inoperative in Starter and Charging.
    •  SECURITY Indicator Inoperative Go to Theft Deterrent Diagnostic System Check in Theft Deterrent.

  1. Buckle the driver's safety belt.
  2. Observe the fasten safety belt indicator.

The fasten safety belt indicator is off.

Fasten Safety Belt Indicator/Chime Always On .

Apply the park brake.

The park brake indicator illuminates.

Brake Warning Indicator Inoperative Go to Brake Warning System Check in Hydraulic Brakes.

    • Operate the LH turn signal.
    • Operate the RH turn signal.

The turn signal indicators flash with turn signals.

  1. Cover the ambient light sensor with a dark cloth.
  2. Turn the headlamp switch to the HEAD position.

The IPC illumination turns on and dims to the setting on the dimmer control.

IPC illumination inoperative. Go to Interior Lights Dimming System Check in Lighting Systems.

Adjust the instrument panel dimmer control.

The IPC illumination varies based on the dimmer control adjustment.

IPC illumination does not vary. Go to Interior Lights Dimming System Check in Lighting Systems.

Turn the high beam headlamps on.

The high beam indicator illuminates.

Start the engine.

    • The engine cranks and starts.
    • The speedometer displays zero.

Engine does not start. Go to Vehicle Theft Deterrent (VTD) System Check in Theft Deterrent.

Press the IPC control button ENG/MET.

The measurement units change for the IPC and HVAC displays.

Instrument Panel Cluster Control Switch Inoperative - ENG/MET

Press the IPC control button DSPL MODE.

The digital and/or analog displays are activated or deactivated on the IPC.

Instrument Panel Cluster Control Switch Inoperative - DSPL MODE

Press the IPC control button RESET TRIP.

The active trip odometer (A or B) resets to zero.

Instrument Panel Cluster Control Switch Inoperative - RESET TRIP

Press the IPC control button TRIP A/B.

The IPC toggles between trip odometer A and B.

Press the IPC control button INFO up.

The DIC scrolls through the various status messages.

Press the IPC control button INFO down until MPH AVG is displayed on the DIC.

The DIC displays the MPH AVG message.

Press the IPC control button INFO RESET.

The MPH AVG value resets to zero.

Press the IPC control button ON/OFF.

Observe the fuel gauge.

The fuel gauge indicates the correct fuel level.

The engine temperature gauge indicates the correct engine temperature.

Observe the tachometer.

The tachometer indicates the correct engine speed.

Observe the service engine soon indicator.

Service Engine Soon indicator is off.

Observe the engine oil pressure indicator.

The engine pressure oil indicator is off.

Observe the battery charge indicator.

The battery charge indicator is off.

Observe the Air Bag indicator.

The Air Bag indicator is off.

Air Bag indicator on, go to SIR Diagnostic System Check in SIR.

Observe the ABS indicator.

The ABS indicator is off.

ABS indicator on, go to ABS Diagnostic System Check in ABS.

Observe the traction control indicator (if equipped).

The traction control indicator is off.

Traction Control indicator on, go to ABS Diagnostic System Check in ABS.

Observe the engine coolant temperature indicator.

The engine coolant temperature indicator off.

Engine Coolant Temperature Indicator Always On .

Observe the SECURITY indicator.

The SECURITY indicator is off.

Security indicator on. Go to Vehicle Theft Deterrent (VTD) System Check in Theft Deterrent.

Cycle the gear selector lever through all of the gear positions.

The PRNDL displays the correct gear positions.

The park brake indicator turns off.

    • PRNDL Indicator Inoperative.
    •  Brake Warning Indicator Always On Go to Brake Warning System Check in Hydraulic Brakes.

Drive vehicle at 48 km/h (30 mph).

The speedometer and the odometer operate properly.

Speedometer and/or Odometer Inoperative .
